The Pittsburgh Pirates narrowly defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers yesterday at PNC Park with the Pirates coming out on top 6 to 5. It was a solid match that aficionados with Pirates tickets won’t soon forget.
Pirates pitcher Matt Capps (5.91 ERA) got the win, while Jonathan Broxton (2.68 ERA) took the loss for the Dodgers. Daniel McCutchen went 6 innings for the Pirates, allowed 5 hits, no home runs and 2 earned runs with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Also pitching for the Pirates was Jesse Chavez (4.11), and Joel Hanrahan (4.86). The Dodgers’s starter Clayton Kershaw went 4 innings, allowed 4 hits, no home runs and 2 earned runs with one walk and 4 strikeouts. Jeff Weaver (3.69), Ronald Belisario (2.10), and George Sherrill (1.75) also pitched for the Dodgers. With the win, Capps’s record goes to 4-8, while Broxton is at 7-2.
In addition to the 6 runs, the Pirates scored 11 hits and committed no errors. Andrew McCutchen led the Pirates in hitting with 3 hits, followed by Andy LaRoche’s 2 hits. Lastings Milledge had a tough day at the plate, leaving 5 runners on base. The Dodgers didn’t have anyone with a big night with not one batter getting more than 2 hits. Juan Pierre could not get much going at the plate as he left 4 runners on base. The Dodgers scored 5 runs, 9 hits and 2 errors.
Umpiring duties were performed by Brian O’Nora, Adrian Johnson, Gary Cederstrom and Field Culbreth. There were 26,831 Pirates ticket holders in attendance at PNC Park.
The win puts the Pirates at a record of 58-96, (31 games behind the division leader), while the loss brings the Dodgers to 93-63, at the top of their division. The Dodgers and Pirates go again tomorrow. There are still plenty of tickets available so take a look.
